Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know about working with Calaweb — websites, hosting, contracts and payment. Can't find what you're after? Get in touch.

Why Calaweb?

Because running a small business is hard enough without your website becoming another problem to manage.

We started Calaweb after seeing too many small businesses end up with overpriced websites, confusing invoices, and designs that looked suspiciously like reusable templates with a different logo dropped in.

We believe small businesses should be able to get great websites at sensible prices.

If your budget is at our entry level, you'll get a great looking, but simple, professional website that does exactly what it needs to do. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing hidden. Just a solid website you can build on later.

And when you're ready to add more pages, features, or functionality, you won't need to start again from scratch.

Some of our clients love updating their own websites. Others would rather never log in again after launch. Both are completely fine with us.

Working with Calaweb means:

  • Sensible pricing (none of the hard-upsell once you've signed up)
  • Websites that grow with your business
  • The ability to edit things yourself without calling a developer
  • Optional hands-off support if you'd rather we handle everything
  • Fast, EU-based hosting backed up with Cloudflare's CDN
  • Fast email support
  • A sounding board for ideas when you're not sure what you need yet
  • Typical turnaround of 1–3 weeks

We're not trying to impress you with jargon or sell you things you don't need.

We just build brilliant websites for small businesses – properly, fairly, and without any hard sell.

Websites

How much does a website cost?

Our websites start from £495 for a simple site, while complex websites vary significantly and can cost anywhere between £1,000–£10,000 depending on specification. We provide a detailed quote after understanding your specific needs, so you know exactly what you're paying for with no hidden fees.

How long does it take to build a website?

Websites typically take two to six weeks from brief to launch, depending on how quickly content comes together. Web applications take longer - we'll give you a realistic timeline in the proposal.

Do I need to provide content and images?

We can work with whatever you have.

If you have content and images ready, great. If not, we can help with copywriting and source professional stock images. We'll guide you through exactly what's needed.

But do remember: the more work you ask us to do, the more expensive your site becomes. For that reason, we recommend that you provide as much artwork (like logos) and copy "ready-to-go" – it will save you a decent amount off a new website.

Will my website work on mobile?

Yes. We design every website from a mobile-first perspective and then iterate for larger screens.

Every website we build is fully responsive and tested across all types of device – phones, tablets, and desktops.

Can I update my website myself?

Yes.

If your website is built on WordPress then you have access to everything through the WordPress CMS, and we will create an admin account for you.

For custom sites, updating can be trickier as there's no standard back-end to edit from. However, for every site we build, we also build an admin area to give you access to changing copy and images easily yourself. Other web designers don't bother with this, forcing you to go back to them for every minor edit.

We're always available for more complex edits and to add features, so you're never alone and can always ask how to do things.

What if I need changes after the site goes live?

We offer a free snagging service for the first 30 days to fix any bugs or gremlins.

If you need functional changes or additions which weren't in the original spec, we can do these at our normal hourly rate. We'll provide a clear quote before starting any work.

Will my site be SEO optimised?

Yes, all our websites are built with SEO best practices in mind, which means proper structure, fast loading times, mobile-friendly design, and clean code.

Before any website goes live, we subject it to a comprehensive SEO audit check to make sure everything is in place and working, and fix any issues that pop up so that it's ready for not only Google, but AI LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude too.

The final step is submitting your site to Google Search Console, which we can do for you or show you how to do it yourself (it should be done from your own Google account, so access is required if we're to do it).

Hosting

Do you offer web-hosting?

Yes. Our hosting is designed to be the perfect partner to your website: it's fast, reliable, fully-managed, backed by Cloudflare's CDN, backed up daily, has unlimited scalability as traffic grows, is constantly upgraded and is the ultimate no-headache way to keep your site online and fast.

Is your web-hosting reliable?

Yes. Uptime exceeds 99.994% and is backed by Cloudflare's CDN, so even if a server goes down, the site stays up.

Is your hosting fast?

Yes, very.

We use state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure which means your site is as fast as anything out there.

Can I use someone else's hosting?

Yes. If you want to use another host, we'll tell you the specification of what's needed (for example if your site uses Supabase or other back-end infrastructure, we'll tell you exactly what) and then send you your site in a format you can install.

You can then run the two sites side-by-side to make sure you're completely happy before making the new host live.

Be wary of choosing a host purely by price – hosting is an expensive business and you get what you pay for.

Are there any data or usage limits?

We don't set hard limits. Being cloud based, our hosting is fast, flexible and can cater for spikes in traffic. You can store up to 25GB of files.

If your site starts enjoying high levels of traffic that are out of the norm and need to be charged at a higher price, we'll let you know at least 30 days before any price change. We will also let you know exactly why we need to put the price up so you can compare with other providers.

If you're expecting a temporary rush of traffic, perhaps because of a news release or similar, don't worry about it – our infrastructure can handle it and your site will be just as fast throughout. We don't charge for temporary blips like this, only if the extra traffic is sustained.

Can you host my site even if it wasn't designed by Calaweb?

For WordPress sites, yes. For others, no – the complexity of setting them up makes the process too costly.

I already have a domain name. Can I use it with Calaweb hosting?

Yes.

You just need to let us know who you registered it with and we'll tell you what settings to change so it points to your website.

Don't worry if you don't understand how it works – we can take care of everything for you.

I've seen free hosting deals. Why should I pay for Calaweb hosting?

Because you get what you pay for.

Hosting websites which are both fast and reliable is an expensive business, so free or cheap hosts have to cut corners and make their money elsewhere.

To offer cheap hosting, they have to do a combination of:

  • Throttling resources by stuffing thousands of websites onto a service designed for hundreds, slowing your website down at peak times and hurting your Google ranking.
  • Putting their advertising on your website, often advertising your competitors' services (reducing your revenue) and making your visitor's experience horrible (again, reducing your revenue).
  • Selling data about you, your visitors and your clients, completely bypassing your privacy policy.
  • Upselling you features you thought were included (like daily backups) at inflated prices.
  • Locking you into an environment that's purposely difficult to leave without losing your website and domain name.

If you don't know how they're making a profit from hosting your website, we'd advise you to read their terms and their privacy policies very carefully.

Where is my data physically stored?

We use cloud services with EU data policies, so all your data is physically located in the UK or EU, is protected by UK and EU laws, and is held with full GDPR compliance.

What happens if I don't pay for my hosting renewal?

We'll let you know that payment couldn't be taken and give you a few days grace to catch up.

If payment still hasn't been made after 3–4 days, your site will be suspended pending payment.

As soon as payment has been made, your site will be reinstated. Suspended websites will be removed from our servers after 3 months of inactivity.

Are your servers up to date?

Yes.

Being cloud-based, our webhosting enjoys the kind of maintenance and updates you get by hosting with the largest companies in the world. 24/7 engineer support is standard, latest hardware and software are rolled out constantly.

Does my hosting come with an SSL certificate (for HTTPS)?

Yes. We only host websites with SSL. If you move your website to another host, you may need to pay for a new security certificate when you do so.

Contracts & payment

Is there a contract for web design?

Once you agree to the scope of the web project, you pay the deposit and at that point, a contract exists between us.

In essence, it means we will deliver the agreed website at the quoted price, and when that's done, you accept the website as complete and pay the balance.

Any contracts for hosting or maintenance will be separate from this agreement.

Is there a contract for web hosting?

Hosting is paid for monthly in advance.

You can cancel at any time and your hosting will continue until the end of the paid-for period. You're not locked into a hosting contract and can move your site at any time.

What are your payment policies?

For websites, we ask for a 50% deposit to begin work, with the remaining 50% due upon completion and before launch. For larger projects, we can split the second payment into three instalments.

Payments for web hosting and domain name renewals are taken 30 days in advance.

For websites we accept bank transfer and card payments; for hosting it's card payments only.
